- homoeo-
- homo-, homoeo-These two prefixes are derived from the Greek words homos meaning ‘same’ and homoios meaning ‘of the same kind’, and this difference in meaning is reflected in the English words formed on them, e.g. homosexuality denotes sexual attraction towards the same sex and homoeopathy denotes treatment of disease by using small doses of drugs that have the same kind of effect as the disease itself. Words in homo- are pronounced either hom- or hohm-, whereas words in homoeo- are more usually pronounced hom-. In AmE, homeo- is the more usual spelling.
